Orbic Batfish (Platax orbicularis)
Family: Ephippidae (Spadefishes, Batfishes)
Natural Range: Indo-Pacific Region
Depth: 16 to 98 ft. Size: 20 in. Jumps: No Space: 180+ gal.
Reef Safe: No Care Level: Moderate Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Algae, invertebrates, jellyfish, anemones, hydroids, algae, small fish
Natural History: The Orbic Batfish is found singly or in small groups in lagoons and coastal reef zones, often with silty water. As a juvenile grows, its body becomes more round rather then vertically elongate as they are when young. This species exhibits different color forms - red, tan, and yellow. Juveniles frequent mangroves and the inner areas of lagoons while adults favor more seaward areas.
Husbandry: The Orbic Batfish is not reef compatible because it feeds on the polyps of many different types of Cnidarians. This fish should be handled with care when transported - it is susceptible to ich (Cryptocaryon irritans).
