Green Merulina (Merulina sp)
Family: Merulinidae (Stony Corals)
Habitat: Lagoons and protected reef areas.
Light: High Water Flow: Medium Space: 50+ gal.
Reef Safe: Yes Care Level: Moderate Temperament: Aggressive
Diet: These corals have zooxanthellae which provide much of their nutrition. It is believed they also feed on microzooplankton and directly absorb some nutrients from the water.
Natural History: Merulina is one of the most attractive corals on a reef. They have multiple growth forms, from branching forms to plates and fans. Corallites are readily apparent with septa that separate them and give the skeleton a ruffled look. Most Merulina corals are found in protected reef zones.
Husbandry: Merulina prefer bright light and moderate water flow. It produces sweeper tentacles from its margins but is considered a peaceful coral. This genus of corals has the reputation of being difficult to maintain in captivity. It should not be placed near other corals and sediment should be blown off the corallites as soon as possible.
AKA: Ruffled Coral, Lettuce Coral, Cabbage Coral, Ridge Coral
